(Austin, TX) - From our friends at the National Football Post (a website all NFL nuts should be reading every day). This is a Colt McCoy scouting report by Michael Lombardi, a former GM in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (copyright, Ron Jaworksi).
Colt McCoy: quarterback, (6-3, 210)
Projection: Mid-first round
McCoy has added a lot of weight and muscle mass to his overall frame since his freshman year. He is a good overall athlete with deceptive quickness and agility, displays the ability to escape pressure and make a play with his legs. Carries the ball a bit too low and doesn’t have the most compact of throwing motions. Has a bit of a wind-up but does showcase a high release point. Average arm strength but great touch down the field. Does a nice job staying in the pocket and keeping his head down field while striding into throws. Showcases impressive touch and accuracy on all levels of the field when he can set in the pocket. Does a nice job stepping up in the pocket and avoiding rushers. Still has a tendency to leave the pocket too quickly but has shown vast improvement since his freshman year. Good footwork and rhythm in the passing game, looks very comfortable scanning the field and getting the ball out of his hands on time. Lacks great arm strength and zip on his deep throws; balls tend to sail on him. Very poised and confident leader with an ability to rally teammates around him. McCoy is very comfortable outside the pocket and shows an ability to make accurate throws on the move. At times will hold onto the ball too long in the pocket and struggle finding the “hot” man; tends to take off outside too quickly and take himself and the offense out of rhythm. Throws a tight spiral down field but lacks the zip to throw into tight windows. Depends on his athleticism, accuracy and touch to make plays and has shown steady improvement as a pocket passer.
